What is Musk?
The sweet and spicy scent of musk boasts a rich history, and has been in constant demand for centuries. It was originally derived from the gland of an adult musk deer, which are native to northern Europe and Asia as well as the Middle East. These small deer, which typically only reach 37 pounds as adults, secret this natural, pheromone-rich aroma when trying to attract mates.
Unfortunately, because of the longstanding high demand for this fragrance, these deer were harvested to the point of endangerment. In the search for a way to conserve these animals while still enjoying the timeless aroma of musk, most musk fragrances are either derived from plants that bear a similar aroma or are synthetically created.
Musk Fragrance Oil
Once an exclusive fragrance permitted solely by royalty, musk oil has been a favored scent as early as the 6th century. During this time, it was only worn as perfume by the elite members of the Arab and Byzantine empires. Mosques were often built with musk oil in the walls, which would release the scent as the building was warmed by the sun…
Musk fragrance oil is notably sweet and spicy with warm notes of leather and wood. It is one of the most commonly used raw materials in perfumery, used as a base note and for its fixative properties.
