What is Juniper?

A member of the Cypress family, juniper (Juniperus communis) is quite a familiar shrub to those living in the cooler temperatures of the northern hemisphere, as it can be found growing wild throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. As it grows, it spreads horizontally across the ground (though some can reach a height of 4-6 feet) and sprouts small, dark purple berries. These hardy evergreens can live for up to 200 years, which is perhaps why they have earned their name, from the Latin word “junio” meaning “young.”

Thanks to its widespread growth, juniper has seen vast use across cultures, cuisines, and wellness traditions. In ancient Roman cooking, juniper berries were used as a substitute for expensive Indian pepper. Juniper is perhaps most famous as the main aromatic ingredient in gin. In fact, the word “gin” comes from the Old French word for “juniper.”

The use of juniper even delves into the spiritual! Ancient Greeks used juniper’s distinct aroma in incense burning. Juniper has timelessly been a part of Tibetan and Native American ceremonies alike, and the Kashubian people of North Poland believe juniper twigs will bring good fortune in a woman’s love life. Mysteriously enough, juniper berries have even been found in ancient Egyptian tombs, though no trace of the plant has ever been found growing in the area…

Himalayan Juniper Berry Essential Oil

Steam distilled from the dark purple, waxy berries, juniper berry essential oil emits an aroma that is pleasantly sweet and warm, yet wonderfully balsamic and woody. In aromatherapy, it is popular during times of occasional restlessness, for those who are looking for a sense of calm. It helps to stimulate the senses and is often used to heighten spiritual awareness, especially during meditation.

Blending essential oils opens up a world of aromatherapy possibilities! Other oils that complement juniper berry oil’s sweet fragrance include: bergamot, black pepper, cedarwood, chamomile, clary sage, eucalyptus, geranium, lavender, lemongrass, orange, patchouli, pine, rosemary, sandalwood, spruce, and tea tree oils.

Piping Rock's pure Himalayan Juniper Berry Oil is available in 1/2 oz. & 2 oz. bottles.
