What is Cinnamon?

Cinnamon, with its warm and earthy flavor, has long been a beloved spice in cuisines throughout the world. Most recognized as the dark brown-red sticks of bark or in powder form, the cinnamon as we know it is harvested from the 20-30 foot tree of the Cinnamomum family. This hardy evergreen is native to Southeast Asia, specifically Sri Lanka, and sports waxy green foliage with small white flowers. The name is derived from the Greek word “kinnamon,” meaning tube or pipe.

This familiar spice has a rich history! It has been a staple in the spice trade for thousands of years and was once so coveted that Arab traders, who had initially introduced the spice to the west, made up fantastical stories of cinnamon’s origins to ward off rival traders. The story goes that in order to harvest this intoxicating spice, one had to brave dangerous marshes to find the nest of the Great Phoenix, where the spice could only be obtained by fighting off the beasts that guarded the treasure trove! Eventually the secret of its true origins was discovered and the spice became a hot commodity in trade routes between India, China, and Egypt.

Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil

As an essential oil, cinnamon is typically available as either the warm, sweet and spicy Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum burmanii) oil or the milder, earthier Cinnamon Leaf (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) oil.

Cinnamon bark oil is steam distilled from the bark of the tree and features cinnamaldehyde, its key component, which is to thank for cinnamon bark oil’s distinct aroma beneficial properties. A favorite for supporting youthful-looking skin, it can also help ward off pesky insects and soothe the discomfort of bug bites! Its spicy fragrance is famous for instilling emotional warmth as it elevates moods and helps ease occasional stress. It helps to fight off mental fatigue and encourages sharp focus, and for some can ignite the passions.

Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil

Steam distilled from the waxy foliage and twigs of the cinnamon tree, cinnamon leaf oil is a less potent oil than that of the bark. Whereas cinnamon bark oil is high in cinnamaldehyde, cinnamon leaf oil boasts a rich supply of eugenol. It provides many of the same properties as its bark counterpart, with some significant benefits of its own.

Other oils that complement cinnamon’s spicy fragrance include: bergamot, cardamom, clove, coriander, cypress, frankincense, geranium, ginger, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, marjoram, neroli, nutmeg, orange, patchouli, peppermint, peru balsam, petitgrain, pine, rose, rosemary, thyme, vanilla, and ylang ylang oils.

Cinnamon Oil Directions for Use

Add 3-5 drops of Cinnamon Oil to a diffuser or vaporizer, to a bowl of steaming water or a hot bath to fill a room with its warm scent. To use topically, add ~5 drops of Cinnamon Oil to ~10 mL of any Piping Rock carrier oil.

Cinnamon Oil is for external use only and should be diluted in a carrier oil such as sweet almond, jojoba, grapeseed or avocado oil before being used topically. Do not apply to broken or irritated skin. Always consult your trusted physician before adding any essential oil to your regimen, especially if you are pregnant, nursing or taking any medications. Discontinue use and alert your doctor should an adverse reaction occur. Keep out of reach of children and away from eyes and mouth. Essential oils are flammable.
