What is White Camphor?
A large evergreen native to Taiwan, the camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphor) is a towering member of the Laurel family. It can reach a height of 100 feet, its branches reaching out to form a capacious canopy lush with aromatic waxy leaves. The trunk of the camphor can be just as impressive as its massive height; the largest camphor tree in Japan, Kamou no Ohkusu, boasts a trunk with a circumference of 79 feet around!
The towering camphor has seen quite the history, from culinary applications to spiritual rituals and wellness traditions. Asian and European sweets have used camphor as a flavoring for centuries. The Hindu people use camphor in religious ceremonies, particularly in burning it while performing aarti, a ritual of worship.
White Camphor Essential Oil
Camphor essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the branches and wood of a mature (at least 50-years-old) tree. It is a unique oil in that it also undergoes fractional distillation, which creates 4 distinct types of camphor oil: white, brown, yellow, and blue camphor. White camphor is the most popular in aromatherapy and is considered a light fractionated oil.
The aroma of white camphor oil is strong and fresh while being notably clean and herbaceous. In aromatherapy, the oil is used to stimulate and invigorate the senses, as well as to offer insight during times of occasional negativity or nervousness. These properties, along with its balancing and grounding benefits, make white camphor a wonderful oil to use during mindful meditation.
Blending essential oils opens up a world of aromatherapy possibilities! Other oils that complement white camphor oil’s fresh fragrance include: bergamot, mandarin, orange, lime, eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, patchouli, basil, chamomile, spearmint, and cinnamon oils.
