Hazelnuts probably bring to mind that rich, creamy chocolate spread known as Nutella…and if they didn’t, we’re sorry you may now be craving it. These nuts, also known as filberts, are actually way more than a sugary spread--they have a lot of beneficial properties. Hazelnuts are grown on nut-producing shrubs that can grow to be up to 18 feet in height and 12 feet wide. The shrubs can be found growing in North America, Italy and Turkey. In fact, Oregon is the largest state in the United States that produces the nut.
Now let’s talk health. Hazelnuts are known for their beneficial nutrients such as protein, monounsaturated fats, thiamine and vitamin B-6. The nuts have long been seen as a heart-healthy snack choice, too. Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as hazelnuts, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. Fun Fact: The hazelnut became Oregon’s official State Nut in 1989.
