What Are Cashews?

Cashews, probably most known as the weird elbow-looking nut found in your favorite trail mix, are native to Brazil and are cultivated primarily in India and Africa. While you may think of this nut as simple, it’s far from it. The nut actually comes from a very odd-looking fruit that is grown on the Cashew Tree. The tree produces what is known as a cashew apple that resembles a pear. At the bottom of the fruit is a kidney shape that holds the nut; however, it is protected by a layer of poison that needs to be detoxified before sold. A long process for a seemingly easy to eat snack!

Cashews bring to the table a myriad of health benefits for the body. They are high in fiber, protein, B vitamins and many other beneficial vitamins and minerals. The nut is a great source of Magnesium, too! With their creamy texture and yummy taste, it’s no wonder why they can be eaten by the handful.

Fun Fact: Cashews were loved by the Native Americans who cultivated the nuts themselves!

Cashew Products

Cashews are primarily sold in trail mixes, or as solo nuts. You can find cashew nut oil; however, here at Piping Rock we love them just as they are found in nature: raw and delicious!

Ways to Enjoy Cashews

Cashews are easy to enjoy alone as a snack or mixed in with dried fruits as a trail mix! If following a vegan diet, cashews can be crafted into a delicious substitute for cheese. Also, you can take these nuts and make your own cashew butter, to make your next “PB&J” a little hipper.

1-2-3 Cashew Butter Recipe:

  • Add 2 cups of cashews into a high speed blender, continuously scraping down the sides when needed, for 8-10 minutes. Once a creamy concoction is yielded, transfer to a jar and seal it tight until use! Store in the refrigerator.
