Zeaxanthin protects the eye's macula and maintains clarity in the eye's lens. On top of optimizing clear vision, Zeaxanthin supplements:**

Read more about Zeaxanthin

What is Zeaxanthin?

A natural antioxidant known as a carotenoid, zeaxanthin is a yellow-colored plant pigment that features high antioxidant activity. Zeaxanthin works in concert with its sister compound, lutein, to support eye health and optimize vision performance. Low levels of this compound in the eyes are associated with vision issues, while it is noted to be abundantly present in healthy eyes.**

Both zeaxanthin and lutein naturally migrate to the eye’s retina, where they help to replenish a protective layer called macular pigment. Thicker, healthier macular pigment is associated with sharper acuity and enhanced measures of vision performance, such as contrast sensitivity and glare recovery.**

Zeaxanthin is concentrated in the macula, especially in the fovea region that is associated with “high definition” vision. In the macula, this carotenoid filters out the dangerous blue-light spectrum that can damage delicate photoreceptor cells. Thanks to this biological action, the carotenoid is highly regarded for helping to protect and uphold macular health.**

Intriguingly, zeaxanthin is one of two carotenoids that are present in the eye’s lens (along with lutein).  Here, these two carotenoids neutralize free radicals generated in the lens by environmental toxins and the sun’s damaging UV rays. Due to its natural presence in the eye’s lens, zeaxanthin is believed to help maintain lens health and lens clarity.**

The US National Eye Institute has reported that this yellow plant pigment seems to enhance the eyesight of adults who are experiencing age-related vision problems. Because of its promising nutritional support for vision health, it was included in the US Government’s AREDS2 eye health study, which is a follow-up to the first AREDS antioxidant study.**

In addition to its well-documented support for eye health and vision performance, zeaxanthin helps to optimize skin health while promoting overall cardiovascular system wellness.**

Zeaxanthin Supplements

Though the compound is present in leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach, and watercress, zeaxanthin supplements are often sourced from marigold flowers. The carotenoid is commonly paired with lutein in supplements designed to support eye health.**

Zeaxanthin Directions for Use

Consult with your health care professional before starting any nutritional supplement regimen. There is no standard  zeaxanthin dosage, but the carotenoid is commonly presented in the range of 1-5 mg.**
