What is Triphala?

Triphala is a balanced formulation of three age-old Ayurvedic staples: Harada (Terminalia chebulia), Amla (Emblica officinalis), and Behada (Terminalia bellerica). These fruits are also known as the three myrobalans— chebulic, emblic, and belleric—and have been used in a wide range of traditional applications for thousands of years, from supporting longevity and overall wellness to promoting digestive health and cleansing of the body.**

Harada, also known as tropical almond, is a tree native to India that can reach a height of 82 feet. It bears medium-sized yellow-orange fruit (which are actually drupes) and has brown, vertically fissured bark. That harada fruit has naturally-occurring antioxidants and a notably high level of tannins. Picked when ripe, the fruit is dried before used.

Amla is commonly called Indian gooseberry and grows on deciduous trees that can reach a height of 26 feet. The berries are greenish-yellow, matching the color of their flowers, and are spherical, smooth, and boast a sour taste. The amla tree is considered sacred to the Hindu people, as it is believed the Vishnu dwells there. The fruit is a symbol of longevity, and is used to balance all three doshas.** It is also a primary ingredient in the ancient herbal formulation called Chyawanprash, an Ayurvedic mixture widely consumed in India.

Behada, sometimes called bahera or beleric, is another deciduous tree commonly found in southeastern Asia. The tree, which can reach a height of 98 feet, bears bunches of leaves, greenish-yellow flowers, and fuzzy fruits that have naturally occurring antioxidant activity. In Ayurveda, beheda is used for longevity and overall wellness.**
