What is Spearmint?

Spearmint, a flowering perennial herb sporting textured green pointed leaves, can be found adding its minty-sweet aroma and flavor to gardens and cuisines around the world. A member of the Lamiaceae family, Mentha spicata can grow up to 3 feet tall and flaunts small bunches of white and lilac flowers. This popular herb, native to the Mediterranean, boasts a rich history in wellness practices and even has its own place in ancient myths and folklore!

In ancient Greek mythology, the water nymph Menthe found herself falling madly in love with—and unable to help but seduce—Hades, the god of the underworld. When this affair was discovered by Persephone, wife of Hades and queen of the underworld, she metamorphosed Menthe into spearmint to ensure she will forever be trampled underfoot. According to some variations of the myth, Hades, saddened by his lover’s fate, adorned the transformed Menthe with the familiar and pleasantly sweet scent of mint we all know today.

Hippocrates used spearmint for a number of benefits, in particular as a stimulant for the body and mind. The ancient Roman herbalist Pliny included spearmint leaves in over 41 potions and tonics, claiming it revitalized one’s entire being and supported healthy, comfortable digestion. Native Americans incorporated the herb into their wellness traditions as well, using it for everything from digestive support to helping ease head discomfort.

Spearmint Essential Oil

Steam distilled from the soft leaves, spearmint oil is considered by many aromatherapists as an absolute must-have in any essential oil collection. Its minty-sweet fragrance is reminiscent of peppermint, though softer and less pungent in its aroma. This makes spearmint a wonderful substitute for those who find peppermint’s aroma to be too strong or overpowering, especially in blends.

Inhaling the fragrance of spearmint oil can awaken inspiration, clearing the mind of emotional imbalance and uncertainty. It can also be sublimely calming in this way, offering relaxing properties to help one focus on the task at hand. Applying to the skin can also support clear, healthy skin.

Blending essential oils opens up a world of aromatherapy possibilities! Other oils that complement spearmint’s minty-sweet fragrance include: basil, cypress, eucalyptus, jasmine, lavender, lemon, orange, peppermint, pine, rosemary, spruce, and tea tree oils.

Piping Rock's pure Spearmint Oil is available in 1/2 oz. & 2 oz. bottles.
