What is Rose Geranium Oil?

Take yourself back to springtime in the classic Victorian Era, where window boxes are overflowing with billowing bright red flowers that fill the air with the smell of roses and mint, and noble ladies in puffed gowns and bodices immerse themselves in perfumes of this delicate aroma…

These flowers are commonly known as geraniums, and can still be found bringing color and fragrance to gardens and homes to this day. A semi-succulent evergreen perennial, geraniums are a member of the Geraniaceae family, of which there are over 600 species. In aromatherapy, it is the species Pelargonium graveolens from which the beloved rose geranium essential oil is derived.

Native to South Africa, this species of geranium is believed to be a naturally occurring hybrid of other geraniums in the same genus. It was first cultivated in the late 1500’s from its native soil and was brought to the Botanical Garden of Leiden via ships that had made port in the Cape of Good Hope. In 1738, Dutch botanist Johannes Burman introduced the name Pelargonium from the Greek word “pelargos,” meaning “stork,” as the flower resembles the beak of this iconic bird. A staple of the perfume industry rose geranium essential oil was first derived in the 19th century and has been a treasured part of aromatherapy ever since.

Rose Geranium Essential Oil

Rose geranium oil is steam distilled from the flowers, leaves and stems of the plant. It emits the rose-mint aroma the flower is famous for, with pleasant notes of apple and lemon. Thanks to its health-supportive compounds such as citronellal and geranial, rose geranium oil can offer wellness benefits for both body and mind.

Rose geranium oil’s floral-sweet fragrance is most widely used to help ease occasional stress and tension. For some, it promotes emotional stability, uplifted moods and a stimulated sense of balance. In massage therapy, rose geranium oil is widely used to help support the skin, mainly thanks to its antioxidant activity. Rose geranium is also a popular ingredient in many natural outdoor sprays to help ward off pesky ticks!

Blending essential oils opens up a world of wellness possibilities! Other oils that complement rose geranium’s floral fragrance and celebrated wellness properties include: bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, clove, cypress, ginger, grapefruit, jasmine, juniper berry, lemon, mandarin, neroli, palmarosa, patchouli, peppermint, rose, rosemary, sandalwood and ylang ylang oils.
