What is Moringa Oleifera?

Also known as the drumstick tree or the horseradish tree — due to the strong, spicy taste of its roots — Moringa oleifera has long served as a source of both food nutrition and herbal healing practices in India, Africa, South America and the Mediterranean. Every part of the tree, from roots to leaves and seeds, can be utilized in a number of ways; Moringa has more than 300 health-promoting uses in Ayurvedic wellness practices alone, and is especially noted as a traditional herb for promoting breast milk production. The seeds are used to purify water in rural and impoverished areas around the world, while other parts of the tree supply nutrients including calcium, potassium, iron, manganese, magnesium, protein, and vitamins A, B-6 and C.**

Modern uses for the herb focus largely on cardiovascular health. Scientific studies show that Moringa oleifera leaves supply compounds called isothiocyanate and thiocarbamate glycosides that are believed to help balance blood pressure levels that are already within a normal range. The leaves also supply plant sterols, including beta-sitosterol, that support cardiovascular wellness and help maintain normal cholesterol levels. Research indicates that the herb may also promote healthy blood glucose levels and enhance glucose tolerance, which – along with its significant antioxidant effects – further contributes to overall cardiovascular health.**

The herb is also a rich source of phytochemicals with antibacterial properties that promote digestive tract health. Other compounds isolated from the herb appear to have inflammation-modulating and immune system-boosting activities. Its anti-fungal properties have been used to help maintain healthy skin. Further investigations suggest that the legendary drumstick tree holds promise in other areas of health; it has been researched in the areas of liver wellness, respiratory health, joint health, thyroid performance and water balance.**
