What is MCT?

MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides: saturated fats that are produced from hydrolyzed palm kernel oil or coconut oil. Fats are an essential component of a healthy diet; however, some people have malabsorption issues that make it difficult to get enough for their energy needs. Medium-chain triglycerides are noted for their small molecular size, which makes them easier to absorb and metabolize than their long-chain counterparts.** Because of this easy-to-assimilate quality, medium-chain triglycerides have been suggested to be helpful for those who have difficulty digesting and metabolizing fats, and may be substituted for a portion of dietary long-chain fat to help contribute to ideal fat intake.**

In order to be burned as cellular fuel, long-chain fats require the compound carnitine as a coenzyme. MCTs, however, do not require carnitine in order to be metabolized, and are able to enter the cells' mitochondria quickly and easily to serve as an efficient, readily available source of energy.** This fast-acting property is valued among athletes and anyone seeking enhanced vitality; medium-chain triglycerides are a source of quick energy that can be delivered to the whole body.** For this reason, medium-chain triglycerides are sometimes used in sports nutrition supplements that are designed to support exercise performance.** In addition, when combined with an intense daily exercise program and a balanced diet including an adequate caloric intake, MCTs may help to support healthy weight management.**

Products

MCT products are typically presented in a liquid form. Some products may specify levels of caprylic acid and capric acid; these are not extra ingredients, but rather the exact names of the medium-chain triglycerides that are found in the oil.
