What are Mangoes?
Mangoes are brightly colored tropical stone fruits (drupes) that can range from sunny yellow to deep red and green. They grow on trees (Mangifera indica) that can reach a height of 130 feet, which thrive in the tropics of southern and eastern Asia, Brazil, the West Indies, and Mexico. These long-lived trees can produce fruit for over 300 years and bear evergreen leaves along with the juicy fruits that take up to 6 months to ripen.
Inside these fruits, mango kernels are long, flat, and hairy, and have been utilized for thousands of years in southern Asia. They contain precious mango oil, commonly called mango butter, which is extracted from the pit and has been used for its skin softening, soothing, and moisturizing properties for centuries. Today, mango butter is a staple of the beauty industry for these same properties.
Mango Butter Products
Like shea or cocoa butter, mango butter is naturally solid at room temperature and melts on contact with skin. This soft yellow butter, which is expeller pressed at low temperatures from the kernel, can also be softened by placing the container in warm water or by microwaving a scoop in a bowl.
Piping Rock’s raw Mango Butter is the perfect moisturizing agent for your hair, skin, and nails. Its emollient properties support youthful softness and elasticity while imparting lush hydration. It can also be used in most DIY projects to create skincare and beauty products such as balms and creams. Mango butter is non-greasy and can be worn beneath sunscreen.
