What is Hemp?
A flowering annual herb that can reach a height of 16 feet, Cannabis sativa originated in the Middle East but is now grown worldwide in tropical and temperate climates. This branching plant produces white seeds which, when pressed, release their nutrient-rich oil, which is one of the few plant seed oil sources that contain a significant amount of omega-6 GLA in addition to omega-3 ALA and omega-9 oleic acid. Hemp is one of the earliest domesticated plants known to man and has been cultivated for over 12,000 years!
The use of hemp was first mentioned in Chinese texts dating back to 3,000 years ago. In medieval times, the oil was used topically in balms and poultices. In fact, hemp may be one of the most versatile natural products available; every part of the plant has been historically used, from making rope, cloth, pulp, and paper, to creating moisturizing agents and wellness applications, and even more recently as an alternative biofuel. Hemp, with its linen-like texture, was even long used to make sail canvases—the word “canvas” is derived from the word “Cannabis”!
