What is Helichrysum?
The flowering evergreen shrub Helichrysum can be found sporting its beloved golden-yellow blooms in the sandy soil of the Mediterranean. A plant of many names, it is also known as Immortelle or Everlasting due to its enchanting ability to retain its gorgeous butterscotch color even after the flowers have been carefully dried. Of all 600+ species of Helichrysum, Helichrysum italicum has been particularly cherished for centuries and is considered the highest quality source of its much-desired essential oil.
Its name is derived from the Greek words “helios” (sun) and “chryssos” (gold) and was an indispensable part of ancient Greek culture. The shrub was described by Homer in his timeless writings, and the Greeks used the bright, dried blooms as respectful offerings to the gods. In Italian cuisine, the flower is often used to add a curry-like flavor to dishes. Truly a plant of many uses, it has also been a part of traditional wellness practices, from that of ancient Greece to South Africa, for generations.
