What is Cypress?

Stretching over 100 feet tall with conifer foliage that reaches for the heavens, the cypress tree’s spiritual influence on cultures across the world is no secret. This Mediterranean evergreen, with its familiar, slender cone shape and twig-like branches, can be found gracing the mesmerizing Greek and Italian landscapes. Cupressus sempervirens, derived from the Greek word for “evergreen,” has been a symbol for the immortal soul and spirituality long before Van Gogh included their distinct, other-worldly shape in so many of his magnificent paintings.

With the ability to live for nearly 1,000 years, it’s no wonder why the cypress tree has earned its divine reputation. Its spear-like shape can be found lining ancient Greek and Roman burial grounds and temples, which is perhaps why the tree is commonly associated with the acceptance of eternal peace and a harmonious afterlife. On the island of Cyprus, ancient Greeks worshipped these trees as representations of the goddess Beruth, and as such would build statues of their gods out of its supple bark. Stemming from its age-old association and appreciation for the wheels of life and death, the Egyptians made their famous sarcophagi out of the wood of cypress trees.

Alongside the belief in cypress’s ability to help comfort mourners come its age-old wellness applications, used by Hippocrates and the Chinese. These traditional Chinese beliefs also associate cypress with contemplation, as the roots of the tree resemble a seated man deep in thought.
