What is Citronella?
Distinctly grassy and lemony, the familiar scent of citronella brings memories of warm summer nights spent enjoying the child-like delight of being outside. Citronella features long, narrow leaves and cane-like stems that emit this nostalgic aroma, which certainly cannot be mistaken for anything else! A tropical plant, Cymbopogon nardus grows naturally amongst the rolling coastal plains on the island of Sri Lanka, where it has been harvested and utilized for its famous abilities to help fend off those pesky bugs for generations.
Found in candles, torches, lotions and sprays, citronella has been historically revered for its role in keeping away bugs, which is due to the presence of citronellal, one of the citronella’s main constituents. Its popularity and dependency as your best friend while hiking in the woods was once unmatched—so much so that during World War II there was a shortage of this precious plant!
