What is Babassu Oil?
Babassu Oil, also known as cusi oil, comes from the fruit of the Babassu palm trees. These trees are native to the regions of South America--primarily Brazil is a major source for them. The trees can grow to be up to 20 meters tall! The oblong nuts which produces the oil can reach 6” long and grows in bunches. The oil is made from the fruit by cold pressing its flesh until it turns into a clear or light yellow color.
Babassu oil, in recent times, has become largely praised in the beauty industry for its versatility. The oil is much lighter than coconut oil, which many have become excited about for skin/hair routines. The presence of rich, fatty acids in the Babassu Oil has made it a great addition to skin creams, lip balms, lotions and hair conditioners! The properties of the oil allow for the skin to have a smoother appearance and look more hydrated. Plus, there’s no icky grease feeling after using!
The Babassu Oil has a composition that comprises heavily of essential fatty acids. It is largely made up of lauric acid, but contains Stearic, Myristic, Plamitic, and Oleic acids as well. Additionally, there’s a rich presence of Vitamin E and Phytosterols.
