What is Astragalus?

Astragalus is a flowering plant that has been used in traditional Chinese wellness practices for millennia. In traditional practices, it is often considered a “tonic” herb that helps with many aspects of wellness. The herb is rich in health-promoting compounds, including flavonoids, polysaccharides and saponins.

Astragalus is also considered to be an adaptogen. A class of wellness herbs, adaptogens are believed to help normalize various physiological markers, and are especially noted for helping the body adapt to various types of triggers.

Astragalus Supplements

Supplement products are sourced from the root of the plant, which is dried to achieve ideal nutritional content. Sometimes identified as huang qi or milk veitch, the herb is particularly abundant in China, where it has been incorporated into wellness traditions for centuries. Astragalus is sometimes combined with echinacea or other herbs as a supplement, but it is often found on its own. Supplements present the root in a readily absorbable and bioavailable form.

Astragalus Directions for Use

Always talk to your health care provider before taking any nutritional supplement. There are no standard daily amounts of astragalus established, but between 1 and 25 g (grams) is common and considered safe. Astragalus root supplements are often available in 400-500 mg (milligram) amounts.
