What is Lime?
Small, green, and oblong, limes are a familiar sight when it comes to fruits. The juicy, lip-puckering flesh hidden beneath the dimpled peel has been used in cuisines throughout the world, and the entire fruit itself has spanned cultures and traditions for generations. Limes (Citrus aurantifolia) can be found growing on thorny shrubs/small trees of the same name throughout the warm climates of the world, though it is believed they originated in Malaysia.
Key limes, as they are commonly known, are believed to be a hybrid of papeda and citron. They are the most drought tolerant and frost intolerant of the citrus fruits. It’s believed they came to Mediterranean Europe by way of the Crusades before making their way to the Caribbean by 1520. Limes became naturalized in the West Indies and eventually made their way to the Florida Keys, where they earned their Key Lime moniker in 1905.
During their impressive journey throughout the years, limes have left quite a mark on cultures around the world! In India, limes are believed to ward off evil spirits. Ayurvedic wellness traditions treasure limes for their mental and emotional benefits, using these fruits to cleanse the aura and restore confidence.
Lime Essential Oil
Lime essential oil is derived from the rind, which contains approximately 7% oil and undergoes a cold-pressed process to extract the oil. The aroma of lime oil is cool and fresh, with the familiar citrus lime fragrance that is a touch sweeter than its lemon cousin. In aromatherapy, lime oil is used for its invigorating, balancing properties. For some, it helps to instill a sense of focus during occasional times of uncertainty.
Blending essential oils opens up a world of aromatherapy possibilities! Other oils that complement lime oil’s citrusy fragrance include: citronella, lemon, orange, neroli, lavender, rosemary, clary sage, and vanilla oils.
Piping Rock's pure Lime Oil is available in 1/2 oz. & 2 oz. bottles.
